Short overview

Bulgaria was founded in the year 681. The christianisation followed shortly after during the reign of Boris I. (852-889). In 1018 became the land of the Byzantine emperor Basileios II ("Bulgarentöter") and was part of the Byzantine empire up to 1186. The independency was regain under the dynasty of the Asen (to 1258). From 1396 to 1878 belonged Bulgaria then to the osmanischen empire. Under Alexander I the Berlin congress created the Furstentum (1879-1886). As his successor followed the prince Ferdinand from Sachsen-Coburg Gotha in 1887. The government was led from 2001-2005 by his grandson, Simeon II. The liberal-democratic party named after him ("national movement Simeon II.") gained at the last parliamentary elections in June, 2005 the second place with 53 representatives in the 240-seater parliament. The biggest faction with 82 representatives is the Bulgarian socialist party (BSP). Third-placed party with 34 representatives was the movement for rights and freedom (DPS) dominated by ethnic Turks. With a total of 169 voices of these three parties the parliament in Sofia approved on 16.08.2005 the central left government which is led by the head of socialists Sergei Stanishev (Prime Minister).

Since 2004 Bulgaria is a member of NATO and since the 1st January 2007 a member of the EU.
